Mark’s Holiday Fitness Gift Picks

I base this assumption on the amount of decorations I’ve seen around town, the songs that are everywhere, all the talk I hear about what to buy for spouses, kids, grandkids, relatives, etc. Why not give a fitness related gift? So I thought I would create a list of gift suggestions based on my preferences.

First of all, what I don’t recommend: expensive treadmills, ellipticals, stair climbers, and exercise bikes. Why you ask? You may think those are good exercises to do and you won’t have to leave your house. You are exactly right. These are good exercises and you can do it in the comfort of your home. But buying them isn’t enough. For them to work, apparently you have to use them, not hang clothes on them. I could stock a gym or two with what is sitting in homes not being used.

Gym/Health Club Membership:  For what you would spend on an expensive piece will buy a lot of months of membership, plus giving you access to a lot more types of equipment than having a single piece. We offer gym memberships here at Fyzical Therapy Center.

I know there are people who will work out at home, so good for you and keep it up. If you do want to have equipment at home here is what I would buy and this is the order I would buy them in:

Kettle Bells: For those who don’t know a kettlebell is like a cannonball with a handle. The variety of exercises you can do with a  kettlebell is limited only by your imagination. You are able to work the entire body from a number of different angles and positions. They come in all sizes and colors. I even have pink ones. Strength training, cardiovascular training, metabolic training, mobility/flexibility work can all be done with a single kettlebell. The average women starts with an 18# kettlebell. The average man a 35# bell. Kettlebell are sold on line, in athletic stores, and even Target has them. Fringe didn’t charge shipping when I bought some from them.

Set of Gymnastics Rings: They can be hung from a beam in the basement, a tree limb,  or playground equipment. They are highly mobile and lightweight. Again, unlimited variety of exercises, upper body, lower body, and core. Perform Better and Power Systems carry them.

Chin Up Bar: An advanced piece, but pull-ups/ chin-ups are great back exercises, develop overall upper body strength and they are good to hang from for spinal decompression. They are easily mounted on a wall, and some styles attach in a doorway. Perform Better Power Systems also carries these, as well as Amazon.

The Stick: After exercising, “the stick” is a poor man’s massage tool. It looks like a rolling pin and is great for rolling over tight, painful muscles. It can be used over the entire body by yourself, or a partner can roll you. They feel great afterwards. You can get them here at Fyzical Therapy and Balance Center.

Lacrosse Ball: It is firmer than a tennis ball and is great for pinpointing and working on tight painful muscles/ trigger points. Some patients call it the ball from hell but it works. We also sell these here at the clinic.
